Instrumental Techniques: Woodwinds
Department(s)
Course Description
This course introduces music education majors to the fundamentals of woodwind pedagogy and performance, with an emphasis on developing teaching proficiency across the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone families. Students will learn tone production, embouchure formation, fingerings, articulation, intonation, transposition, and basic maintenance for each instrument. The course emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy, diagnostic listening, error detection, and instructional strategies for heterogeneous classroom and ensemble settings. Students will gain practical experience through in-class performance, peer teaching, and applied exercises designed to strengthen both individual competence and pedagogical versatility. By the end of the semester, students will demonstrate a working knowledge of woodwind techniques sufficient to teach beginning and intermediate players in school band and general music programs.
